A brief history of Iron-Bru.net, who we are and what our aim is.
Iron-Bru.net is firmly established as the No.1 independent Scunthorpe United site on the internet. We are in a position where our stories, and posts by fans on our messageboard influence the news agenda and are read by important people at the club.
This site was launched on January 1 2000, as a bid to fill the void left by the sad departure of ScunthorpeFC.com (formerly Iron Net). Within months we had our first revamp, and launched a paper fanzine. A small amount of money was donated to SUFC as a result of this, but we only produced three issues due to time and financial constraints.
We decided to concentrate on the website instead, and secured sponsorship from Total Football magazine. After Future Publishing closed the magazine we joined the FootyMAD network, in the autumn of 2001, to keep costs low and focus on the quality of the site.
Even though we carry adverts, Iron-Bru.net is not run a commercial site. It is run solely by volunteers. We have previously sponsored shirts at SUFC, and have contributed money to the Official Supporters Club, Irish Iron and Iron Union.
Since joining the FootyMAD network, which is part of the Enterainment and Sport Agency, the site has gone from strength to strength. Many of our volunteers have gone on to work for several high-profile media organisations – Luke Thornhill at the Press Association, England MAD and The National, Patrick Hill at the Cumberland News and Press Association and Chris Mumby with SUFC’s official website.
At the end of December 2007, Iron-Bru.net merged with Claret-bluearmy.co.uk, another unofficial site which was founded by Matt Blanchard and Josh Devan, creating the strongest team yet behind the site. Armed with several volunteers to help moderate the popular messageboard, 2008 has seen many additions to the site.
The team are as determined as ever to add even more features to the site, with the 2008-09 season promising to be our best yet.
